Services and Products

What services are provided by Black Dog Gardens?

Black Dog Gardens offers flexible services personalized to each individual gardener. Whether it is your first year gardening or your 50th, Black Dog Gardens can find a way to help.

The gardening year begins with the planning stage in April and May. I will meet with each gardener and we will discuss together what the most appropriate gardening arrangement is based on the space, resources, time constraints, and most importantly the desires of the gardener. We will come up with a plan and an individualized contract for the work I will do through the year. At this time we will also figure out where to acquire all the plants the gardener requests (ie. seeds, starts, ordering perennials).

Once the soil warms up enough in mid to late May, I will begin work on the garden as per the individualized contract mentioned above. This may include:

  • removing sod
  • digging up new garden space
  • building garden boxes
  • amending the soil
  • planting seeds
  • transplanting starts and/or perennials
  • pruning fruit trees and bushes
In June and July the work lessens considerably and includes activities like:
  • weeding
  • watering
  • more planting
  • fertilizing
  • applying compost tea
  • mulching
By July (and even late June) there should be vegetables ready to harvest. August and September are Alaska's months of plenty and I encourage you to harvest and share as much of your bounty as you are willing with friends, neighbors and Bean's Café (see "Building Community").

The growing season ends in early October. By then the garden should be picked clean and covered in a thick layer of mulch to insulate the soil for the long winter ahead. This is also a good time to reflect and start planning again.

As season progresses, the hope is that the gardener will become mostly self-reliant in maintaining their own growing space. Some gardeners may only require help in the planning and planting stages while others may wish to have help the entire season.

All work is billed at a rate of $20/hour
